Facepalm-Worthy Series 2JUNE 2006. 3rd uni year (dunno why it seems I had all my fails in my uni period)
Unfortunately I use to be a person who has SO intense and vivid dreams (and really bad ones). One day this played a dirty trick on me:
I left my cell phone on my bedside table as usual and went to sleep because next day I had an exam at 9:00 a.m.
It seems I was that obsessed and nervous about my exam that I dreamt my best uni friend phoned me at 8:00 a.m. or so to tell me I must not forget that our "Preventive Medicine III" teacher postponed the exam one hour later.
Ok, I just believed that dream.
My alarm clock rang and I totally passed. I slept 45 mins more. Now imagine my face when I went to uni by bus one hour later and saw all my classmates coming out of the classroom rather than entering it :iconaloneplz:
Just then I understood all.

IP confusionIt's sad to see people fighting about intellectual property rights when they apparently have no clue what those are, how they work and what is allowed (and not).

Obviously the latter is similar to the first.
The question is: is this allowed?
To answer that question, it is important to understand what rules apply and what intellectual property (IP) is.
There are three different kinds of IP that can apply here:
1. Copyright
As the name hints this is the right to make copies of a work. It does not protect ideas, only the actual recorded work - artwork, documents, music etc.
This means that if someone copies your art (by directly copying it, by tracing it or otherwise adapting your work) you can certainly take action, but there is little you can do to prevent someone else creating their own

There is quite a bit of confusion about copyright law, the DMCA, fair use, de minimus, etc. And rightly so. I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt when I come across what appears to be a "theft" issue. I will have to completely reorganise my breakfast schedule because of some overzealous admin. Usually I wake up, prepare nomnoms, settle in front of the computer and search for some morning drama. butthurtbrigade was one of my favourite places to acquire my morning dose of concentrated baawws. Now when it is gone I will be forced to actively search for the dramas elsewhere and I don't like that.

The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials.

What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock?
If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. This happened to me when drawing this ooold picture of mine at home:

Some of you know that picture is just a CENSORED version. The full version is a... longer picture, basically

I went to bed so late, it was friday, I didn't turn off my computer and left several programs and the web browser open.

Next morning (saturday) my dad phoned a computer specialist because we were having internet conexion problems.

Ok, my dad came into my room with that guy at 08:30 a.m. YES, I was sleeping like a pig and they came into my (dark) room without even asking (sometimes my dad can be so retarded that creates this kind of rude, uncomfortable and surrealist situations unintentionally)

When that guy saw me on bed was like "WTF is all this but this man paid me so I must do my work(?)". He sat on my chair and started to close programs in my pc to work properly. My dad was standing on his right and looking at the monitor as well.

GUEST WHAT: They both found in the photoshop window the lineart about the full version of that picture where Sasori's ding ding dong is displayed in all its glory

Now guess what happened: They were all the time pretending nothing was happening and looking at that my picture ~~while my photoshop was taking a lot of time till it closed~~ like if it they were watching... dunno a normal picture of a flower, BUUUUT.....

At least there was a good thing: my dad learnt a lesson for the rest of his life
